How to Make the Pruitt RCD Last Longer (Part I)
Proper lubrication is the best way to make the rotating control device (RCD) last longer in the field. The RCD gets its lubrication from the oiler system. The bearings and seals are the main components that need this lubrication.
Some of the ways to make sure the RCD is getting oil:
· Make sure the oiler system is full of oil.
· Connect air from the rig to the oiler system and be sure the ball valve is in the open position to let the air to the oiler system. The pressure gauge should read 12-14 psi.
· After the air is connected, be sure a steady drop of oil is coming out of all three male hydraulic hose connects.
· Then, connect the three hydraulic hoses from the oiler system over to the rotating head.
A few things that are easily forgotten are:
· Check the oiler system periodically to be sure it has oil.
· When the rig air has been shut off, be sure the air gets turned back on after the oiler system has been filled.
· Make sure the male hydraulic hose connects on the oiler system does not get turned off, or turned up to high. If the system is turned off this will not allow oil to flow to the RCD causing premature failure. If the system is turned up to high this will cause the oiler to run out of oil quickly and need to be refilled more often wasting time and money.
· It is important to put clean oil in the oiler system. If not, the filter will clog up or dirty oil will be pumped to the rotating head and cause the bearings and seals to fail quickly.
· Check the oil filter and have spare filters on hand for replacement if needed.
Following these simple guidelines can greatly increase the life of your Pruitt RCD saving your rig both time and money.
